Apprentice Jobs

My Sunbelt Story

Lauren Jobson – Hire Desk Controller

“When I was 17, I found myself at a bit of a crossroads in my career. I had originally planned to become an equine vet and started studying a course at my local college. However, over time, I realised that turning my passion into a career wasn’t right for me, so I decided to consider other options. That's when I came across an apprenticeship opportunity at Sunbelt Rentals, and two years on I haven’t looked back.”

Dealing with real life scenarios

“In October 2022, I officially joined Sunbelt Rentals on an apprenticeship scheme as a hire controller. It was an exciting opportunity for me, and I was eager to learn a new set of skills. I chose the apprenticeship route because I loved the idea of learning on the job, rather than sitting in a classroom all day, absorbing information without practical experience. Being able to apply what I was learning in real-world situations was invaluable—it gave me hands-on experience, made things click faster, and provided me with the confidence to deal with real scenarios, instead of hypothetical ones.”

Securing a permanent position

“My apprenticeship lasted 16 months, slightly shorter than the typical duration, because I worked through the materials quickly. I was proud to complete it ahead of schedule and transition into a permanent position as a hire controller at Sunbelt Rentals' Grimsby Lifting Depot. My role involves being the first point of contact for customers, helping them figure out what they need, and sometimes even pointing them toward additional equipment that would make their job easier. I’ve learned a lot about nurturing customer relationships and the importance of understanding their needs, often when they don’t fully know what they need themselves.”

Developing new skills

“One of the biggest skills I developed through this apprenticeship is communication. When I first joined, I was terrified of answering the phone. The idea of speaking to a customer made me incredibly nervous, but now it’s second nature. I’ve learned how to give customers the best service possible and how to stay calm and composed, even when things are busy or complicated. Working with a variety of customers every day has been one of the most rewarding aspects of the job. It’s great knowing I’m helping people and making their jobs easier, and it’s helped me build my confidence enormously.”

“Product knowledge was another steep learning curve for me. When I first stepped into the workshop, I was clueless about the equipment. I couldn’t name a single thing! But over time, by asking questions, going out with the engineers, and seeing the equipment firsthand, I became familiar with the tools and machinery we work with. I even learned the different names customers use for the same equipment, which helped me become more efficient in my role.”

Gaining additional qualifications and experience

“During my apprenticeship, I studied the hire controller course, which was delivered online weekly. The course covered a wide range of topics including health and safety, systems management, and confidentiality. The support I received from my mentor at Sunbelt was instrumental in my development. I was encouraged to explore different areas of the business, going out with the drivers and spending time in the workshop to understand how everything worked. This holistic view of the company gave me a much deeper understanding of how my role fits into the broader team, and how all the moving parts contribute to Sunbelt’s success.”

Continuing my professional development

“Looking ahead, I’m interested in continuing my professional development. While I’ve completed the highest level for the hire controller course, there are other higher-level courses available, such as management training, that I’d like to pursue. Sunbelt is great in that way—they’re always supportive of further learning and development, and I know they’ll back me if I want to take the next step in my career. They invest in their employees and are willing to help you achieve your goals if you’re determined to put in the effort. That kind of encouragement makes me want to give my best to the company, knowing they’re just as invested in me as I am in them. It’s been a transformative experience, and I’m excited about what the future holds.”

Michael Kinnane – Plant Maintenance Engineer

“I joined Sunbelt Rentals in September 2022, age 31, looking for a career change after spending 12 years working as a butcher. I was looking for a role that offered more fulfilment and longer-term growth opportunities, so I started an apprenticeship programme with Sunbelt Rentals as Level 2 Construction Plant Maintenance Engineer.”

“My apprenticeship has introduced me to a wide range of skills from welding, hydraulics, and mechanics, to electronic work such as soldering and circuit board repairs. But thanks to the opportunities Sunbelt gives you I’ve also developed a wealth of knowledge outside of that with health and safety courses, first aid, and forklift training to mention just a few.”

The college programme

“I studied a Land-Based Service Engineering programme at Myerscough College where I attended a two-week block session every six weeks. The study programme, combined with the opportunity to apply the skills within the depot really enhanced my learning and I received fantastic support from both my college and workplace mentors throughout.”

Endless opportunities

“One of the best things about working for Sunbelt is the opportunities provided for personal and professional development. Throughout my apprenticeship I was actively encouraged to take on additional responsibility eventually taking the lead on third party servicing, repairs, and calibration.”

“I also enjoy working in an industry where technology and innovation is at the forefront, always providing opportunities to learn about new equipment and processes designed to transform people’s lives.”

Next steps

“I’ve just recently completed my Level 2 apprenticeship and have already applied for a Level 3 which is scheduled to start in November. Once I’ve completed my Level 3 I hope to be able to take on more responsibility and be in a position to pass on my expertise to future apprentices, contributing to the next generation of skilled engineers.”

Max Lambert – Business Administration Apprentice

“When I was finishing my A-levels at Loughborough College, I had a decision to make: follow the traditional route to university or try something different. The idea of balancing hands-on experience with continuous learning was really appealing. Not only did I want to avoid the hefty debts that come with university, but I also craved real-world experience – and that’s exactly what my business administration apprenticeship at Sunbelt Rentals provides me with.”

A valued member of the team

“I started the apprenticeship programme in August 2023, working in the internal training department. My responsibilities are far from what people might expect from an apprentice. I manage the driver induction program, which involves booking courses, arranging accommodation, and ensuring everything runs smoothly for new drivers. I also handle first aid and manual handling courses, making sure that the company’s training needs are met. This level of responsibility has made me feel like a valued part of the team from day one.”

Development opportunities

“One of the best parts of my apprenticeship has been the opportunities I’ve had to develop both professionally and personally. I’ve been able to extend my knowledge by attending courses such as first aid and even sit in on the driver induction program. Getting a front-row view of how the business operates has been invaluable providing insights and an understanding that I wouldn’t ordinarily have got.”

Skills development

“Working closely with managers and my colleagues has significantly improved my teamwork and communication skills. There’s a real sense of collaboration here, and we always make sure we’re on the same page. The work environment encourages learning and growth, and I’ve learned to be patient and adaptable, which is key when working in a large organisation.”

College course

“As part of my apprenticeship, I’m also studying for a Level 3 qualification in business administration with North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College. The course is all online, and I have regular sessions with my tutor, along with a skills development coach who tracks my progress. The learning is highly relevant to my role, especially when it comes to things like managing stakeholders and handling budgets.”

The future

“Looking ahead, I’m excited about the future. I’ve developed a real passion for training and hope to continue in this field after completing my apprenticeship. Sunbelt Rentals is a large company with so many opportunities, and I feel like the sky’s the limit for where my career could go.”
